Glossary -- T

telecoil - a wire coil contained within a hearing aid that picks up magnetic energy available from telephones or other assistive listening devices.

TTY/TTD - a device for severely or profoundly hard of hearing persons that allows written messages to be sent or received via telephone lines.

threshold - the softest level at which a sound can be heard 50 percent of the time. The term is used for both speech and pure tone testing.

tinnitus - a sensation of ringing, roaring, or buzzing sound in the ears or head. It is often associated with hearing impairment and noise exposure.

transition - occurs at the age of three when a child and family are no longer eligible for services under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This is a collaborative process involving families, Part C, and Part B programs and, as appropriate, other community-based preschool programs to ensure uninterrupted provision of appropriate services. Planning and decision-making must occur well in advance of the child's third birthday.

tympanogram - a measure of the mobility of the tympanic membrane (eardrum).
