Glossary -- R

real ear measurement - a testing technique used to measure the sound levels produced by a hearing aid while in the ear canal. A probe microphone is placed in the ear canal alongside the hearing aid.

receptive language - understanding language. This includes memory and understanding what is heard. Therefore, receptive language relies on hearing.

referral – the initial process of identifying a child who may need services. If the child is three years of age or younger, the child can be referred through the single point of entry of the local infants and toddlers’ office. Other referrals using specific documents may be made to private practitioners such as audiologists or other specialists via a pediatrician or other specialist.

residual hearing - the amount of measurable, usable hearing.
