FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is Maryland Keys to Communication?

Maryland Keys to Communication is an 8-week tutorial program designed by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals. It was developed to educate and support families whose children have been recently identified with a hearing loss.

Why is this program important?

Reaching parents whose children have been identified with hearing loss and providing them with much-needed information, support, and resources is an important undertaking. Research shows that when children with hearing loss receive specialized services early -- beginning before six months of age -- their communication skills and education may remain on par with their hearing peers.

What kind of specialized services do children who have hearing loss need?

Known as Early Intervention, these services typically include speech-language therapy, audiology and special instruction, but may also include others.

How does the Maryland Keys to Education program work?

Led by a professional, parents gain valuable understanding of the central issues of hearing loss and how it pertains to young children. Parents learn about communication choices, audiology, technology and education. Additionally, parents get practical tips on what they can begin to do immediately to establish communication with their child and encourage early literacy. Consideration and attention is also given to family support, emotional and social issues, parenting challenges, and the changes in family dynamics.
